Image is view of Downievill just before dawn

This image was made just before dawn on a spring morning in 1976. Our daughter, who was 5 at the time, remembered us making this photo for years because she really enjoyed the pancake breakfast she had right afterwards at the Quartz Cafe in town.

Downieville is located at the confluence of the North Yuba and Downie rivers. One of the larger mining towns in the Northern Mines, gold was first discovered here in 1849. By the mid 1850s Downieville was California’s fifth largest town. After the placers gave out hydraulic, drift and lode mining continued in the area.

Gold finds in Downieville can still make news. Over the years we've heard several reports of large nuggets being found in one of the rivers right in town!
